HIV-positive people in South Africa's Gauteng province are to benefit from a new housing policy announced in the capital, Pretoria on Tuesday, 19 April 2005.
According to Godfrey Tsotetsi, chairman of the provincial legislature's standing committee for housing, it was pivotal to form such a response to the pandemic, seeing as 15 percent of the Gauteng population were already living with HIV/AIDS.
"We have come to realise that HIV/AIDS not only ravages households, but also disrupts the socio-economic system of the country. It leads to low productivity at the shop floor level and compounds the problems of poverty, by robbing families of breadwinners" the South African Press Association quoted Tsotetsi as saying.
Under the plan, houses will be built so that HIV-positive people and their families are close to health care and educational facilities and have access to water, sanitation, community support and home-based care.
