Nurses' HIV/AIDS preparedness initiative to be launched

11 April 2005. IRIN PlusNews. Republished courtesy of IRIN PlusNews.
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) is to launch a new five-year US $815,000 initiative that will equip nurses to better care for HIV-positive patients.

According to DENOSA spokesman Lesiba Seshoka, the project intends to simultaneously increase HIV/AIDS nursing capacity, while providing nurses with personal support services.

"Nurses face the everyday reality of the impact of AIDS and endure more psychological stress than the general public, yet at the same time are expected to provide care." Seshoka was quoted by a local newspaper, the Pretoria News, as saying.

The programme is a collaboration between DENOSA and the Canadian Nurses' Association.
