Former South African president Nelson Mandela held his second HIV/AIDS benefit concert this weekend, this time highlighting the plight of African women.

Speaking to an audience of about 20,000 in the southern resort town of George, in Western Cape province, on Saturday, Mandela said: "For every woman and girl violently attacked, we reduce our humanity; for every moment we remain silent, we conspire against our women; for every woman infected by HIV, we destroy a generation."

According to local newspaper, The Cape Times, artists such as Annie Lennox and Queen performed alongside South African musicians at the event, hosted by actor Will Smith.

An estimated US $1.6 million raised through concert ticket sales and Mandela's 46664 campaign will go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation's HIV/AIDS programme.
