The second Nelson Mandela 46664 HIV/AIDS benefit concert, to be held in Fancourt Golf Estate in George on Saturday, promises to put the first one, held in Cape Town, to shame.
Accommodation for well-heeled and less affluent visitors has been reported to be at a premium in George, but there is still room in nearby Knysna and Mossel Bay. Unlike the first concert at Green Point Stadium in 2003, which failed to raise much money but raised awareness of HIV/AIDS with huge worldwide audiences, those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS are set to benefit financially this time.
Elaine Mackay, organiser and manager for the HIV/AIDS campaign of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, dismissed the view that the concert would be exclusive to the elite, saying 15 percent of the 20 000 tickets would be sold to corporations to be given to disadvantaged communities.
He said the venue was also strategically central for people from the Eastern Cape and Western Cape. Stars include Queen with Paul Rodgers, Annie Lennox, Katie Melua, India, Arie, Johnny Clegg, Kabelo, Mandoza and Danny K. |
