HIV/AIDS efforts "redoubled" in KwaZulu-Natal province

South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province has announced plans to increase the number of people on anti-AIDS treatment from 5,000 to 30,000 by March 2006.
In his State of the Province Address earlier this week, Premier Sbu Ndebele said the increase was part of the provincial government's need to "redouble" its efforts in addressing the pandemic.
BuaNews, the government news agency, quoted Ndebele as saying: "In 2005 and 2006 we will be aggressively broadening the district health system ... complete the construction of 10 new clinics and two new community health centres, [and] initiate the construction of two new district hospitals."
The province has an estimated HIV/AIDS prevalence rate of 33 percent, much higher than the national rate of 25 percent.
