New campaign brings greater condom availability

07 February 2005. IRIN PlusNews. Republished courtesy of IRIN PlusNews.
Health officials in South Africa's Gauteng province are set to increase the annual distribution of free condoms in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.

Making condoms more widely available is one of the objectives of a new campaign, called 'Sexually Transmitted Infections and Condoms', kicked off by the provincial health department on Monday.

Department spokesman Simon Zwane told the South African Broadcasting Corporation that this year's campaign was aimed mainly at men, as they were more resistant to prevention and treatment actions.

Although an estimated 70 percent of young people were currently using condoms, Zwane said the aim of reaching the others had also encouraged the increased distribution.
