Hollywood actor Will Smith is to become an ambassador for the 46664 HIV/AIDS campaign. This was announced by the campaign's patron, Nelson Mandela, after he met Smith at his offices in Houghton, Johannesburg, on Thursday.

Smith, who is in the country to promote his film I, Robot, brought his entire family to see Madiba. They included his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, their two young sons, his mother Carolyn Smith and Jada's brother Caleeb.

The 46664 campaign, which is endorsed by a number of international artists, including pop stars Britney Spears and Beyoncé Knowles, is aimed at creating awareness around the issue of HIV/AIDS. 46664 is the prison number Mandela had while he was incarcerated on Robben Island.

"I'm convinced that his message will reach those at most risk of HIV - the young," said Mandela to a packed audience of local and international media.

Smith said he had spoken to Mandela four years ago about the possibility of including him in the campaign and that back then he did not know what would be required of him. Smith said Mandela had told him that what was important was to create hope through the work done by 46664 ambassadors. Mandela urged young people to stay HIV-negative in order to realise their dreams.

"Will Smith, you have demonstrated here today that you are a leader and we are honoured to associate you with the 46664 campaign," Mandela added.
