Paper Giant tackles HIV/AIDS in the workplace

02 September 2004. Republished courtesy of IRIN PlusNews.
In an effort to tackle HIV/AIDS among its workers, South African pulp and paper giant, Mondi, is encouraging employees to undergo voluntary HIV counselling and testing.

Over 1,000 employees at Mondi's headquarters in the port city of Durban were urged to know their HIV status by making use of free counselling and testing facilities set up by the company.

A local newspaper, The Mercury, quoted Mondi CEO John Barton as saying, "Knowing your status means that steps can be taken to ensure the best quality of life possible. We are offering free counselling and testing to all employees and their families. Access to treatment, education programmes and support groups will also be provided."

This report is delivered to the English Service of the United Nations' Humanitarian Information Unit but, may not necessarily reflect the views of the UN.
