Call for Proposals - 16 Days of Activism - No Violence Against Women and Children

As part of celebrating the decade of democracy, the Foundation for Human Rights in South Africa in partnership with the Department of Justice and constitutional Development, invites civil society organizations to submit proposals in respect of programmes that deal which deal with violence against women and children and which supports the efforts of women to take charge of their lives. The funds of this programme were raised through the efforts of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development through the "16 Days of Activism" campaign against violence against women and children.
The fund is specifically earmarked for grants to projects which deal with the eradication of violence against women and children and will be administered by the Foundation for Human Rights.
Nature of Activities:
The organizations should be involved in:
- Prevention of abuse of women and children
- Raising awareness with regard to women and children's rights and their empowerment thereof
- Providing counseling and support to victims of abuse
- Providing shelter for abused women and children
- Conducting and facilitating workshops and dialogue on women's rights, gender and related issues
- Capacity building of organizations dealing with gender based violence
- Focus on abuse of elderly and disabled women
- Expanding on the definition of rape, sexual violence and sexual harassment in the South African law.
- Specific programmes directed at the youth, schools and the society aimed at eradicating the prevailing culture of and negative attitude to women and promote positive culture and attitude to women as human beings whose person should be respected and valued
- Projects that impact on the capacity of women to enjoy their rights as enshrined in the Constitution.
Eligibility Criteria - Who may apply:
The organisations must:
- Be a South African NGO, CBO
- Be non-profit making
- Be registered as an NPO or Section 21 company or not for profit Trust
- Have a track record of working on issues of violence against women and children
- Be directly involved in preparation, implementation, and management of the project
Current partners of the Foundation are welcome to apply if they have a programme on violence against women and children and is not already funded by the Foundation. Projects that were awarded grants from 2003 16 Days of Activism programme will not be a priority, but there will be exceptions on the Foundation's discretion. Duration of the project must not exceed 12 months (one year). Grant amount will be to a minimum of R50,000 to a maximum of R200,000.

The Foundation for Human Rights does not charge any fees nor does it employ agents for handling proposals.
