Senzekuhle Project is one of a number administrated by the NSA Training Arts Programme (TAP). This particular initiative commenced in 1999 and received funding from the SEM Charitable Trust. The project aimed at providing a number of unemployed women with skills that would enable them to produce articles that they could sell in order generate a basic source of income. In the process, it was intended that Senzekuhle women would also derive a sense of confidence, self-respect and pride by becoming economically independent.
The end of April 2004 saw the end of the five-year project. In this time the women have become skilled in Tufted Rug Making, Weaving, Embroidery and Paper Furniture Making. The name of the project ? Senzekuhle ?was aptly chosen. It means ?we make beautiful things?. Recognition for the success of this project is, in a large part, due to the patience and dedication of Pat Trijssenaar who tutored the women on this project.
The project ends on a note of concern. The participants have acquired the skills and are enthusiastic about their future potential. However, the marketing and selling of their products seem to have met with little joy. At the end of the day the success of the project cannot be measured by the ability of the women to produce the articles but rather by the extent to which their dreams of economic independence can be realised. Any suggestions and thoughts will be greatly valued. Please submit any ideas to: NSA Gallery, PO Box 37408, Overport, 4067. Tel: 031 2023686; Fax: 031 2018051; Email: [email protected].
