National HIV/AIDS Database: Call for Submissions
Joint CHSR &D and HIVAN Press Release. December 2003.
|
The Centre for Health Systems Research and Development (University of the Free State) and The Centre for HIV/AIDS Networking (HIVAN, University of KwaZulu-Natal) is compiling a national database of all organizations involved in HIV/AIDS projects, programmes and activities in South Africa, at the behest of the National Department of Health.
The Centre for Health Systems Research & Development (CHSR&D) was established at the University of the Free State (UFS) in 1993. The Centre evolved due to a recognition of a longstanding tradition of research and training in medical sociology/sociology of health and health care in the Department of Sociology. The Centre was founded specifically to meet the dire need for social scientific and operational research and related skills in the field of health and health care.
The Centre for HIV/AIDS Networking (HIVAN) works to stimulate multi-disciplinary research and partnerships in the field of HIV/AIDS, and to provide mechanisms for cross-sectoral networking around HIV/AIDS research, training and intervention. The Centre exists as an enabling "hub", linking individuals and organisations in order to promote a proactive and cohesive response to the epidemic.
To this end, we call on all organizations that currently support and/or have recently implemented HIV/AIDS-related projects, programmes or activities, including institutions that have conducted research on HIV/AIDS, to submit their details for inclusion in this database. We call on donor agencies, philanthropic agencies, government departments, the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community-based organisations (CBOs) and faith-based organisations (FBOs) to help us populate this database. Once complete, the database will be accessible online.
As such, this is an ideal opportunity for those organisations involved in the HIV/AIDS sphere to disseminate information regarding their projects, progammes and activities, to mobilize support and to identify potential future collaborators. In addition, the database will provide government and donors with information on current HIV/AIDS-related activities in South Africa that can assist with improving, planning and optimizing resource allocations in support of the national response to HIV/AIDS.
Submissions can be made through the following media:
- Telephonically: Contacting the HIVAN Database Line and submitting the organisation's details by short telephonic interview. Telephone: 031 - 5668019 or 031 - 5668021.
- Electronically: By submitting the organisation's contact details via an electronic form to be found on the project's website: www.aidsdata.org.za
- Postal - printing and completing the questionnaire from the website, and posting to: AIDSDATA.org, PO Box 25080, Gateway, 4320, South Africa
