Kranskop to pilot KZN Khomanani campaign

The Natal Witness. 4 September 2003. Republished with kind permission.
The rural area of Kranskop in the Midlands has been selected by the national government to pilot the Khomanani Campaign in KwaZulu-Natal. The Kranskop Community Communication Action Plan (CCAP) are to communicate accurate information and positive messages about HIV and AIDS to the residents of Untunjambili.

Khomanani is the Tsonga word for "unity" or "coming together and looking after each other". The campaign was established by the government and commissioned by the Department of Health. It involves a multi-media programme to spread information, raising awareness and mobilising communities to become involved in tackling health issues such as HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and TB.

Khomanani is divided into six sub-campaigns, covering the following issues: Circles of Support, Positive Living, TB, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Health Care Excellence and the Khethimpilo campaign. The Kranskop Khomanani Communication Action Committee incudes people from different sectors of Kranskop who have been trained for the job. The members are from local NGOs and CBOs, and include a DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Supporter), a home-based caregiver, an Untunjambili Hospital representative, schools representatives, the Izingane Zethu Project, the local Community Policing Forum, the Hlongwa Network and a local radio station, Radio Khwezi.

The Kranskop Khomanani CCAP Committee has selected Circles of Support to help orphans affected by HIV/AIDS through the loss of their parents, and those who are orphaned by other circumstances. CCAP media liaison officer Irvin Sihlophe said their goals include increasing the number of orphans attending school, increasing the number of foster parents, ensuring that the children get food and helping orphans to obtain birth certificates. He said it is a pilot project aimed only at Untunjambili and limited to 200 orphans.

For more information about the Kranskop Khomanani CCAP, phone Sihlophe at 032 481 5520 or 072 372 9930, or Zophumelela Myaka (Deputy Chairperson) at 072 289 0780.
