Child protection week launched

The Minister of Housing and Acting Minister of Social Development, Ms. Bridgette Mabandla will officially launch Child Protection Week (CPW) at the Human Science Research Council, (HSRC) on Monday (26 May 2003).

She will call on the public including business, labour, non-government organisations community based organisations, faith based organisations, traditional leaders and civil society at large, to join the various activities planned to mark the CPW from the 26 May to 7 June.

The Theme for CPW is "Child Protection is Everybody's Business."

The Minister is also expected to urge individuals, families, communities and society at large to protect children from all conditions of vulnerability including poverty, HIV/AIDS and other social ills through the promotion of children's rights to social security as well as easy access to other government services.

The objectives of CPW include amongst others:

  • The promotion of the rights of children;

  • The intensification of the registration of eligible children for social grants i.e. those under 9 years this year for social grants;

  • Highlighting the plight of children especially with regard to abuse and

  • Promoting partnerships to protect and promote the rights of children


  • Millions of people are expected to join the CPW activities locally, provincially and nationally this year.
