Intensive pre and post test HIV/AIDS counselling course

The Centre for HIV/AIDS Networking (HIVAN), in partnership with the School of Psychology at the
University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, will be holding an intensive eight day pre and post-test HIV/AIDS counselling course.

The course content includes:
  • Representations of HIV/AIDS in South Africa

  • Self awareness and worldviews and their impact on the counselling process

  • The TASO model of counselling

  • Origins of HIV/AIDS and its epidemiology

  • Transmission

  • The immune system

  • Stages of HIV infection and sexually transmitted infections

  • Sexuality and safe sex counseling

  • HIV testing and diagnosis

  • Counseling in context

  • Counseling skills

  • Pre test counselling

  • Post test counselling


  • This course will develop your understanding of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and will give you the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to offer pre and post-test HIV/AIDS counselling. However, it will also equip you with skills and understanding that will enable you to engage in meaningful conversation with other people about the epidemic.
