The organisers of South Africa's first national AIDS Conference today (17 March 2003) announced the programme for the Conference, and opened the call for papers and registrations.
Chair of the South African AIDS Conference, Prof Hoosen M Coovadia, said the organisers of the SA AIDS Conference were committed to providing a programme of high quality, embodying the rigours of science and firmly focusing on the major advances in prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. It would further examine the socio-economic realities of the epidemic.
The programme, which is made up of five tracks, will consist of various formats including plenaries, parallel sessions and symposia.
The five conference tracks are as follows:
Basic Science and Clinical Science:This track covers virology, microbiology, immunology and molecular biology research relevant for the
diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS, clinical research, including topics such as the clinical course of HIV infection, prevention and treatment of opportunistic diseases, anti-retroviral therapies and clinical trials for preventing mother to child transmission, gene therapy and provision of care.
Epidemiology, Prevention and Public Health:Covers research on descriptive and molecular epidemiology of HIV transmission and risk factors, natural history, progression of the disease and survival, evaluation of biomedical and behavioural preventive interventions, and public health strategies.
Social & Economic Sciences:Devoted to a broad range of behavioural and social sciences, including economics, Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology. This track concerns the social theory that underpins response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Rights, Politics, Commitment and Action: Explores how policies and programmes are created, debated, applied and evaluated.
Startling Successes & Spectacular Failures/Projects & Programmes:This
track allows for both data-driven and non-data-driven abstracts that cover a range of projects and programmatic interventions in the HIV and AIDS field, covering the range of prevention, treatment, care and support activities.
Human Rights, Ethics, Commitment & Action:This track sets out to examine a range of issues and explores the commitment and action of our leaders and those in charge of programmes, be these research-oriented or operational.
The ethics of the responses of the State and other structures around HIV/AIDS will also be examined, as well as how policies and programmes are created, implemented and evaluated.
More than 3000 delegates are expected to attend the Conference.
"The objective of the organisers is to substantially lower participant fees, thereby ensuring that all who should attend will be able to do so. Sponsors contributed significantly towards the success of the XIIth International
AIDS Conference by helping defray the cost of participation. We would like to believe that because of this, they have gained substantial benefit from being associated with the Conference. We have developed specifically for the South African AIDS Conference 2003 a selection of marketing sponsorship opportunities tailored for increased exposure and added value," explained Coovadia.
The South African AIDS Conference will be held from 3rd to 6th August 2003 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban.
