The Phomolong Permaculture Project was launched on February 27, 2003 with the support of the Canada Fund and Food & Trees for Africa.
Unemployed, indigent and hungry community members living around the Phomolong Clinic in Atteridgeville approached Food & Trees for Africa to provide them with permaculture training and gardening equipment. Over the past nine months the gardens have been developed and now boast a range of diverse vegetables and herbs.
As it is located in the clinic yard members use the opportunity to work with TB and HIV/AIDS patients that attend the clinic and the project is also reaching out to local schools. The group has the aims of empowering their community with information on permaculture, herbs and n utrition, urban greening, recycling, environmental awareness and project management. They also hope to work with the City of Tswane Metro to maximise environmental safety, health and natural beauty and reach the best possible level of sustainable development for the well-being of the community. |
