A limited number of copies of "Just a Little Smile" is available for distribution to groups and networks working with young people and children affected by HIV/AIDS. This 25-minute, professionally made documentary was produced by Madoda Ncaciyana from Vuleka Productions in Durban, South Africa, as a pilot project to sensitise and train young people to respond to the psycho-social needs of vulnerable children and caregivers.
Linda Richter, Executive Director of the Child, Youth and Family Development research programme at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), and a Professor in Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, designed the project and implemented it over a period of a year in a rural area in KwaZulu-Natal. The Ford Foundation Southern Africa Office funded the project and the film production.
The young people were trained to support children in three ways:
- to provide information to and support access of children, families and caregivers to resources, including school entry, nutrition assistance and social grants;
- to provide friendship to isolated children and caregivers through home visiting and school accompaniment;
- through psycho-social techniques, to reactivate withdrawn children and help them to respond positively in social exchanges with caregivers and others.
The documentary illustrates some aspects of this work, and also the growth in confidence, engagement and increasing social commitment of the young people themselves.
The video is available free of charge to non-governmental agencies and networks and in both PAL and NTSC formats.
Linda Richter and Vuleka Productions are working on a second companion videotape for training groups and networks wishing to undertake or expand on a youth-child component in their activities. This product will be available in July 2003.
