Nutritional care and support training course

The Institute of Food, Nutrition and Family Sciences (IFNFS) at the University of Zimbabwe, in close collaboration with the International Agricultural Centre (IAC) will be holding a regional training course on nutritional care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS from 20 - 31 January 2003 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The course is aimed at programme planners, managers, trainers and researchers in government and NGOs or AIDS service organisations involved in designing and implementing nutritional care programmes for people with HIV. Professionals from sectors such as health, nutrition, education, community development and agriculture from national, district and municipal level are encouraged to participate.
The course will cover:
- HIV disease progression and implications for immunity and nutritional status
- Nutritional care and support for people with HIV, including recommendations for HIV related complications like diarrhoea, weight loss and loss of appetite
- Role of micronutrients in HIV
- Nutritional care and support for children with HIV, food security, food safety and hygiene
- Social aspects of HIV infections
- Nutrition education, communication and counselling for people with HIV
- Implementation and integration of nutritional care and support in programmes/ policies
- Extensive practical work on translation of guidelines into culturally specific recommendations, preparation of recipes and nutrition education
