Trust Fund aids KZN orphans

Jani Meyer. The Mercury, 4 December 2002. Republished courtesy of Independent Newspapers (Pty) Ltd
Less than a year after it was established, the Orphans of AIDS Trust Fund handed over its first grants to eight worthy organisations at a function held at Independent Newspapers early in December 2002.

The Trust was established to provide associations with financial support to look after the more than 100 000 orphans of AIDS in the province. The R50 000 grants wil help to enhance or upgrade activities, structures or skills of the organisation.

Eight welfare societies received R50 000 each to assist in looking after children in their care. The provincial MEC for Health and one of the trustees of the Fund, Dr Zweli Mkhize, said it was a great day for the Trust, which had started off as a "wish and a dream".

"We must stop pointing fingers about what could have been done and ask ourselves what we can do," Mkhize said.

The Trust is a joint project by Independent Newspapers KZN, business and government. It is also supported by the European Union Consular Corps. To date, almost R1 million has been pledged or donated to the Fund and the trustees hope that more charities looking after orphans of AIDS and other vulnerable children will be assisted.

Independent Newspapers Managing Director Graeme King said it was a happy occasion to provide the first grants to worthy causes. He also thanked donors and business for their support, especially Standard Bank and forensic auditors KPMG.

The eight organisations which received grants were: the Verulam Child and Family Welfare Society; St Philomena's Home, the Child and Family Welfare Society of Pietermaritzburg, the Pinetown Child and Family Welfare Society, the Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society, the Gozololo Centre for Needy Children, the Lamontville HIV/AIDS Support Centre and God's Golden Acre.
