"This is a wake-up call," United States singing sensation Alicia Keys has told young South Africans.
"It is not often South Africa hosts an important event like this, but one thing that does happen every day is that people are infected with HIV/AIDS," said Keys at Green Point stadium in Cape Town on Thursday.
Keys will perform at the Staying Alive Concert, an HIV/AIDS awareness event, at the stadium on Saturday night.
The concert will also feature R&B popstars P Diddy and Usher, supported by Danny K, Mandoza, SA Popstars 101, Zola, Ready D, and Idols finalist Bianca le Grange.
On Thursday the award-winning singer handed nearly a thousand tickets to the concert to more than 32 local schools.
Babalwa Tembani, from Matthew Goniwe High School, was overwhelmed to see her favourite artist up close and personal."I am very excited to see Alicia Keys in person and shake her hand. She is my favourite singer," said Babalwa.
Addressing the media, Keys said the huge number of people living with HIV/AIDS was increasing and it was the reason "why we came to South Africa".
"If people think HIV/AIDS is somebody else's problem, they must think again, because it does not just affect a few individuals, it concerns everyone. Protect yourself. Use a condom," she said. |
