UKZN musical tale promotes awareness of HIV/AIDS in Africa

UKZN African Music Project
University of KwaZulu-Natal African Music and Dance students are to perform "Dowry" - a stunningly elegant production of traditional African music, dance and threatre - promoting awareness of the menace of AIDS in Africa, at the Howard College Theatre.

Written and directed by Elie Kihonia of the Democratic Republic of Congo: African Music Project Artist-in-Residence 2002, "Dowry" premiered at the Byham Theatre in Pittsburgh, USA in 2001. The Durban production is a collaboration with Dr. Patricia Achieng Opondo, Director of the African Music Project at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.

The drama is interspersed with traditional African music and dance, yet behind the traditional ceremonies are issues that are very modern, very real and not at all limited to the villages of Africa, emphasises Dr Opondo.

Dr Opondo says that the worst betrayal is that of which no one speaks. The danger does not lie within the lust of a greedy husband, the jealousy of his wives, the loveless, arranged marriage of a young girl or even in the true object of her affection. The true danger is larger than the individual stories of an African village - it is the betrayal that will bind them all together.

Dowry will be performed for only one night.
