ANC maintains AIDS stance

The African National Congress-led government is to forge ahead with its holistic approach in its bid to stem the tide of HIV and AIDS - instead of just providing drugs to AIDS sufferers.

This is according to the ANC's discussion document which was released last week in preparation for its December national conference where a new leadership for the party will be elected.

The paper notes that the government will continue with a developmental approach in dealing with HIV and AIDS linked to programmes dealing with poverty, underdevelopment and access to basic health care for all.

The government has come under intense criticism from opposition parties and other interest organisations recently for its steadfast refusal to provide anti-retroviral drugs to AIDS victims.

The ANC, however, has maintained that the administering of drugs alone would not address the AIDS pandemic and has argued that the drugs were expensive and would strain the fiscal purse.
