Mbeki rejects calls for Manto to quit

The Star, July 18 2002. Reprinted courtesy of Independent Newspapers (Pty) Ltd.
Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang is staying put despite a call by Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town Njongonkulu Ndungane for her to quit.

President Thabo Mbeki has full confidence in her, said his spokesperson Bheki Khumalo.

"If people disagree with the minister, the best they can do is to engage with her instead of calling for her resignation," said Khumalo.

Responding to reports that a R600-million grant to KwaZulu-Natal from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM) might be jeopardised, Ndungane suggested Tshabalala-Msimang look for another job.

"We were happy yesterday that this money was going to be released, but today we find it's another story."

Ndungane's call followed last week's demand by the Democratic Alliance for Tshabalala-Msimang to step aside, saying she has been embroiled in numerous controversies.

A spokesperson for the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Nathan Geffen said Ndungane's statement reflected the lack of confidence which many people, organisations and institutions had in Tshabalala-Msimang.

Geffen said the TAC would comment further later.

Tshabalala-Msimang denied in a statement on Wednesday that the R600-million was in jeopardy.

Proper procedures in its procurement had not been followed.

These had now been resolved by her office and by KwaZulu-Natal, and all other concerned parties.

The money will no longer be handled by the province, but by the SA National AIDS Council to benefit all provinces equitably, she said.
