Only one of an estimated 3 800 HIV-positive employees had disclosed his status at South African chemical and mining leader Sasol, where the national problem of stigmatisation hampered effective responses, according to a study presented yesterday.
"People living with AIDS are a key resource in their own environment. The problem is that only one person in the company has come out with his status at work," said researcher David Dickinson, an economist from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Sasol, the first local company to allow a study on its responses to HIV and AIDS in the workplace to be made public, urged other corporations to share their experiences.
