Information on future funding opportunity: AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition

AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition
18 May is World AIDS Vaccine Day, marking the anniversary of a 1997 address by former US President Bill Clinton challenging scientists to develop an AIDS vaccine within 10 years.

Each year on 18 May, IAVI (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) partner AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC) releases a comprehensive progress report on the global effort to develop safe, effective and accessible preventive AIDS vaccines.

This year the report is titled "5 Years and Counting" - marks the halfway point since Clinton's call.

The report will be posted on IAVI's website on 18 May and outlines ways for community groups and concerned individuals to advocate on behalf of AIDS vaccine science and access.

With the release of the report, AVAC announces the creation of The AVAC Fund, which will function as a small-scale emergency fund to assist needy human vaccine trial sites that require immediate help with purchases such as additional medical or laboratory supplies not covered by grants or contracts.

The Fund is accepting contributions on AVAC's website, www.avac.org. Once the Fund reaches US$10,000 in donations, trial sites in resource-limited settings will be able to apply for grants up to $2,000.

A committee consisting of HIV vaccine investigators and AVAC Board members will review requests, and awardees will be listed on AVAC's website.
