Abstract: The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is primarily interested in funding basic medical research areas that have direct and immediate relevance to pediatric HIV/AIDS. While the foundation supports basic medical research using clinical samples, it does not fund large therapeutic trials or the pharmacologic development of drugs.
The goal of the Scholar Awards program is to encourage the young investigator to select pediatric HIV/AIDS as a research focus for his or her career. Awardees must work with a qualified sponsor.

Amount: $30,000 - $46,000
Requirements / Eligibility: Ph.D./M.D./Other Professional. Applicants must have two to three years of postdoctoral experience. Tenured investigators are not eligible. Investigators outside of the United States may apply.
The foundation is especially interested in the following areas:
- Transmission of virus from mother to infant, including prevention
- Pathogenesis of HIV infection- Vaccine development
- Breast-milk transmission
- Characterization of immune response to HIV (including immune reconstitution)
- Mucosal immunity to HIV (including studies of the pediatric gastrointestinal tract)
- Central nervous system and HIV
- Host genetic factors that increase or decrease susceptibility of the neonate to perinatal HIV infection
- Epidemiology and health services research (e.g., international studies addressing issues related to seroprevalence and incidence; counseling and testing of pregnant women; adherence to therapy; operational issues related to implementation of perinatal prevention programs; establishment of registries to address issues of long-term toxicity of interventions; cost-effectiveness analysis)
- Other critical areas highly relevant to pediatric HIV/AIDS research, such as microbicides
