“Access to treatment and other controversial issues in HIV preventive vaccine trials? was the theme of the September 2003 Public Health HIV/AIDS Journal Club presentation given by Ms Catherine Slack at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal. Ms Slack is the Co-ordinator of the HIV/AIDS Vaccine Ethics Group (HAVEG) at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg.

August 2003's Journal Club session featured a presentation by Dr Pranitha Maharaj of UND's School of Development Studies, who, with Professor John Cleland, has authored a paper entitled "The Quiet Revolution: Condom Use within Marriage", featuring new research into condom use by married and co-habiting partners in KZN's rural and urban settings.

Two presentations were featured at the April 2003 HIV/AIDS Public Health Journal Club held at the University of Natal's Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine: "Reviewing the HSRC Report on HIV" presented by Professor Jerry Coovadia, followed by "Spinal TB in the era of HIV - clinical and basic science investigations" presented by Dr Suresh Kumar of the School's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Professor Willem Sturm from NU's Department of Medical Microbiology was the guest presenter at the March 2003 session of the monthly HIV/AIDS Public Health Journal Club, held at the University of Natal's Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. His talk was entitled: "The association between HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections".

The last Journal Club meeting of the year featured Andy Gray and Dr Donnie Mcgrath from the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Natal's Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine in Durban. Their presentations focused on recent clinical and logistical reviews of "Making ARVs available in resource-poor settings".
