Eastern Cape announces $43million in HIV/AIDS spending

South Africa's Eastern Cape Health Department is to spend US $43 million on expanding HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care in the province.
Provincial director of primary healthcare, Jistasp Khan, said the main goal of the new budget allocation was to increase the number of people accessing anti-AIDS drugs from the current 15,169 to 27,000 by the end of this year.
The department also planned to intensify home-based care programmes to reach 85,000 patients by the end of the next financial year in March 2007.
Eastern Cape's plans for expanded care and treatment comes just weeks after Finance Minister Trevor Manuel announced that national spending on HIV/AIDS would rise to more than $258 million in 2006/07.
