Targeted Research Grants: American Foundation for AIDS Research

Wednesday, May 15, 2002

Abstract: The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), a New York not-for-profit corporation, is pleased to announce the Targeted Research Grants program for Novel Viral and Cellular Targets for Anti-HIV Agents Including Use of Combinatorial Libraries. An amfAR Targeted Research Grant satisfies various financial obligations incurred in the course of an HIV/AIDS-related investigation. The current Request for Proposals (RFP) seeks to encourage research in these and related areas:

1. Additional genes and gene products of HIV that have been neglected in drug development, including Vif, Vpr, Tat, Rev, and RNaseH
2. Cellular targets in HIV drug development
3. Use of combinatorial libraries to screen for lead anti-HIV compounds, based upon existing, validated assays of target function
4. Development of high throughput assays to enable screening for candidate anti-HIV compounds

The amfAR invites letters of intent for research projects in the following areas:
- Exploration of innovative approaches to interfere with specific viral regulatory or accessory proteins essential to the HIV life cycle
- Research in modulation of normal cellular proteins critical to the functioning of HIV regulatory of accessory proteins
- Research in development of inhibitors of HIV integration
- Design of new assays to test the activity of specific agents with potential activity against HIV regulatory or accessory proteins
- Research using combinatorial libraries to screen for lead anti-HIV compounds based on validated assays
